The Reality of Failure
“We seem to gain wisdom more readily through our failures than through our successes. We always think of failure as the antithesis of success, but it isn’t. Success often lies just the other side of failure.” - Leo F. Buscaglia
Today I found a great article on failure and decided to spend some time pondering failure and how Odyssey plays into the facade our nation, according to Mr. DeWitt, has decided to participate in.
I have to say that I agree with Mr. DeWitt - we spend so much time avoiding failure. It really is a natural and necessary part of success, and if we avoid it, aren’t we essentially failing? Tricky isn’t it.
So what about Odyssey? How does it work with this? Well, I believe it helps. When students take their pretests in Odyssey, they often fail one or more standards/objectives on the assessment. When the student goes to their backpack/portfolio, and they see that score, what do we say as teachers? “That’s okay, you now have assignments designed to fill those gaps. You will learn it and show that success on your post-test.” The failure identifies what we need to be successful. So simple isn’t it?
What are your thoughts on Odyssey and how it helps with failure? Please share, we’d love to hear you.
